The Waypointe is a new mixed-use development that combines retail apartments with a variety of restaurants, open-air cafes and other retail proprietors, as well as a large, upscale movie theater tailored to couples and families.

The project has been in development for a number of years and will be located at 515 West Ave. It will have access to I-95, Route 7, the Merritt Parkway and Boston Post Road, and will include a covered parking garage.

“We believe Colony Grill is one of the restaurant linchpins of this project,” said Paxton Kinol, principal at Bellpointe Capital, which is developing Waypointe. “We love their pizza, their local authenticity, and their commitment to community as a company. Colony is a tremendous amenity to the Waypointe project.”

Colony Grill opened its first location as a tavern in an Irish immigrant neighborhood in Stamford in 1935. The Irish American owners employed Italian and Eastern European chefs during the Great Depression to create its popular thin-crust pizza that was designed to fit on a narrow bar top. The pizza, which is smaller in diameter than a traditional pizza so it can be easily managed with one hand, is drizzled with a pepper-infused hot oil that gives it its signature taste.

Colony has been named one of the “Top 101 Pizzas in America” by TripAdvisor and featured in national publications. Its pizza became so popular that Colony did away with its other menu items and its grill, but kept the name Colony Grill as a link to its heritage. Colony has opened other grill-less locations in Fairfield and Milford.

“We think Colony Grill is at once a perfect fit for the Waypointe and for the great city of Norwalk,” said Ken Martin, co-owner and operations director of Colony Grill. “We are extremely excited to be an integral part of this brand new hospitality and entertainment hub, which should serve many of our loyal Norwalk customers in addition to numerous new Colony guests from nearby Route 7 and I-95 communities.”

The newest Colony Grill is expected to open at its Norwalk location in mid-summer.

In addition to Stamford, Colony Grill also has locations in Fairfield and Milford.
