Coleman Street Developers unveiled the new GreenPort Flats to a gathering of community members Thursday afternoon.

The 42,100-square-foot building at 62 Coleman St. offers 39 modern one- to four-bedroom apartments.

“It’s a perfect example of opportunities that exist in Bridgeport,” Mayor Bill Finch told The Daily Voice in front of the GreenPort Flats complex. During his administration, he has seen the creation of 1,000 housing units  — with more on the way.

“We’re seeing a housing boom,” Finch said. “And it’s a good thing.”

The community members praised the new apartments.

“This is phenomenal,” said Brian Cook, a lifelong Bridgeport resident. New developments in the city such as Steelpointe and the GreenPort Flats apartments are welcome and needed, he said.

Marc Campbell, owner of Ean Fleming Enterprises, worked on the building and was responsible for the landscaping.

“We made this building smile,” he said.

The apartments, which are located in a secure gated community, have a preserved brick façade and large, new, insulated low-e glass windows.

Apartments contain high-end finishes and reclaimed materials, according to the developer.

A one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in the complex is going for $1,009 per month, according to a listing on apartment rental website Oodle Marketplace.

Originally a mansion built in 1890, the building became a nursing home in 1957. Then, for years, it sat abandoned and vandalized until its recent development.

The building’s developer is a subsidiary of Caritas Capital Partners. Caritas is a New Haven-based firm that finances projects that rehabilitate abandoned buildings into income-generating housing properties.

“We are committed to improving our neighborhoods and work with our tenants to fulfill community needs, such as facilitating the set up of a neighborhood watch,” Rafael Sanz, Caritas Capital Partners CEO and president, said in a press release. “We thank our local partners, some who have been here in Bridgeport for more than 25 years, for their work in making this project come to fruition.”
