Serels, of Westport, received the new board certification offered jointly by the American Urologic Society and the American Urogyncologic Society, according to a press release from Norwalk Hospital. Board certification is a "means of standardizing care while providing the ability to offer a highly recognized level of care," according to the release.

"Dr. Serels has been involved in many innovations in urogynecology, and has received the Frank J. Scallon Award for Surgical Innovation in recognition of his achievements," representatives said in the release. "These pioneering efforts have specifically focused on treating stress urinary incontinence with 'sling' procedures as well as using Botox in the bladder to treat over-activity."

Serels has given numerous courses for physicians throughout the world on treatment for pelvic prolapse and incontinence, according to the release and he will be presenting data on long-term single incision sling at the Annual Meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society this month.

A member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Female Urology and Urodynamics, Serels also completed extensive research in surgical therapies for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse as well as overactive bladders in men and in women, according to the release.
