Valentine's Day Makes For A Busy Time For Wilton Florist

WILTON, Conn. -- Mary Jones won't say whether she sees a lot of last-minute purchases by men on Valentine's Day at her WIlton shop.

Mary Jones, owner of Stewart Flowers & Gifts at 76 Old Ridgefield Road, said Valentine's Day is always busy.

"I plead the Fifth," she said with a laugh while standing in the middle of her store, Stewart Flowers & Gifts at 76 Old Ridgefield Road.

Valentine's Day is one of the peak selling periods for floral businesses, and it's no different for Jones.

"Mother's Day is a little bit busier, but we love our Valentine's Day," she said.

A man tends to buy flowers for their mother and wife or girlfriend on Mother's Day. But on Valentine's Day, there are slightly fewer flower purchases for mothers, Jones said.

Jones has been in the floral business for years and also owns two stores in Ridgefield: and Rodier Flowers and Ridgefield Flowers.

She has noticed a trend of people moving away from just roses. Many choose to spruce it up with other flowers to give a different, more springlike look to their Valentine's Day bouquets, Jones said.

"Roses are definitely a classic for Valentine's, and that will never fade. There are some folks who are looking for a little more flair, a more artsy design," she said. "Some people are craving spring, so they gravitate to more spring flowers."

Jones had a suggestion for buyers on what they should pick out.

"Here's what I recommend: roses this week, spring the next week and then they could do green the week after," she said with a smile.
