HARRISON, N.Y. - The season may have ended for lacrosse player and Harrison sixth-grader Kyle Stalteri, but that didn't stop him from picking up his stick and tossing the ball around with friends. Surrounded by barbeque food and fun at the pool, the boys still couldn't stop themselves from playing.
"We worked our butts off," Stalteri said. "It was fun playing on the team. Our coaches were awesome, too."
The Harrison Youth Lacrosse League ended another successful season on Wednesday by throwing a barbeque and pool party at the Ron Belmont Pool Complex in West Harrison for $5 a person. Roughly 85 parents, players, and friends ignored the cloudy skies and shared stories of their team's winning season.
"Everybody's into it," League President Bob Cipolla said. "This is the culmination of our spring season."
Cipolla helped craft the league into what it has become now as it supports 230 players from kindergarten through middle school.
Ron Belmont was superintendent of recreation when the league was formed and Cipolla said he was "instrumental" to the growth of the league.
"It's phenomenal what the league does," Belmont said. "They did this completely from scratch."
Cipolla said the league's success came from a commitment to community. Coach Sean Kelly is an example of this as a Harrison native who grew up in the local school district and played lacrosse in high school and college.
"It's cool getting all the kids to participate in this," Kelly said. "I like seeing that everyone made it out here to celebrate."
The Harrison Youth Lacrosse League started nearly 10 years ago and has grown into a staple of local sports. The league competes regularly throughout the region including against teams in Larchmont and Rye.
