The exhibit, on display until March 18, showcases oil paintings of purple mountains, blue moons, vanishing prairies and more works inspired by her observations of nature, a topic that has motivated this cancer survivor for years.

“My recent art endeavors have been inspired by nature and my time outdoors meditating with the elements, be it day or night,” said MIA. “I cannot help but to acknowledge the transcendence taking place at all hours in the sky right before my eyes. Therefore, I am creating art that attempts to capture or reflect this heavenly communion of sorts in each of my oil paintings currently on display.”

An appreciation for the beauty of natural landscapes is nothing new for MIA, however. The artist grew up in the Beardsley Park area, where she spent many days exploring the woodlands and observing wildlife.

She continued drawing inspiration from the natural world while studying fine arts at Housatonic Community College and Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

MIA also received a master’s degree in elementary education and has organized after-school programs teaching various subjects, including the constellations, Native American studies and Greek mythology.

She spent 12 years working with the Bridgeport School system before retiring early due to her current illness.

Nonetheless, MIA remains an active member of the Fairfield County art scene.

She is a resident of the Read’s Artspace artist community in downtown Bridgeport. She’s also curated various local art shows including “BPT Pop Art” at the Bridgeport Arts + Cultural Council.

“I hope my oil paintings will encourage others to take a moment to appreciate the daily beauty found in our constant but ever-changing sky and landscapes surrounding us,” said MIA.

The Discovery Museum is located at 4450 Park Ave.
