Montvale police got a call to do a security check on the distraught 50-year-old man just before 2:30 yesterday afternoon, but by then he’d made it to the bridge and climbed onto a southern rail, police sources told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Officers trained in talking to potential jumpers had him engaged for more than an hour, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said. A friend who was there also tried to help, he said.

Eventually, the man jumped.

As of early this afternoon, a body hadn’t been recovered, Pentangelo said. No car was found on the bridge, he said.
