Mayor Mark Boughton will declare Food Day for Danbury with a proclamation at noon.

The Danbury Farmers Market Community Collaborative and the Danbury Coalition for Healthy Kids are collaborating to bring Food Day to Danbury.

Food Day is a nationwide celebration and movement to promote healthy, affordable and sustainable food, and to inspire Americans to change their diets.  Every Oct. 24, thousands of events around the country bring Americans together to celebrate and enjoy real food and to push for improved food policies.

The theme for this year is Put Connecticut on Your Plate

To commemorate Food Day in Connecticut, the Connecticut Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is encouraging all of its  2,000-plus members, as well as partner health organizations, agencies and schools, to organize Apple Crunches, where participants simultaneously crunch into an apple. The Connecticut Apple Crunch is scheduled for noon Friday, but Crunches can also take place at any time on Food Day and still count toward the celebration. With Mayor Boughton's proclamation, the Danbury Farmers Market will be giving free apples throughout the day.

Started by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest and other food leaders in 2011, Food Day is an event that organizers hope will inspire many Americans to improve their own diets and work toward solving food-related problems at the local, state and national levels.

Last year, more than 5,000 Food Day events took place. For a list of participating organizations and Food Day events taking place in Connecticut, visit http://www.foodday.org/connecticut.
