Westport Poet Joins Holocaust Remembrance Day Event In Southport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Holocaust Remembrance Day, also known as Yom Hashoah, is April 16. A host of events are already underway.

April 12, Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut, Southbury: Newtown resident Rita L. Frost who has been researching the heroic deeds of Varian Fry since 1977, will speak at 4 p.m. Fry saved over 2,000 artists, scientists and intellectuals trapped in Nazi-controlled Vichey, France. Frost and her friend Marion Percy of Stamford have found 10 survivors but continue to hunt for more. A short film, "Assignment Rescue,” narrated by Meryl Streep and roughly based on a book by Dr. Fry, will be shown following Frost's talk. April 15, Congregation Beth El, Fairfield: Arnon Goldfinger, an Israeli-born writer, producer and director of the award-winning documentary “The Flat," will be on hand at 7 p.m. for a screening and discussion. The movie deals with Goldfinger's discovery of his grandparents’ close relationship with a high-ranking Nazi official. The event is free and open to the public with a dessert reception. April 15, Jewish Federation of Southern Connecticut, Southbury: Professor Harry Reicher, from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, is the keynote speaker at this event, "What Will It Take For the World To Learn? April 15, JCC, Greenwich: JCC Cinema presents "Numbered," the story of Auschwitz survivors with a keynote introduction by Holocaust Survivor Agnes Vertes. The event starts at 6 p.m. and is free. Information: Temple Sholom, 300 E. Putnam Ave., 203-552-1818.

April 18, Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ), Southport: Following a brief remembrance service, the short film “Why We Remember the Holocaust” will be shown. Sixth- and eighth-graders from Black Rock Elementary in Bridgeport will do a reading of “Children of the Holocaust," and students from Fairfield University will show their final memorial projects. In addition, Westport poet Stephen Herz will read selected poems from his latest Holocaust book, "Marked." CHJ member and Wilton resident Lou Reens, who survived the Holocaust as a hidden child in Holland, will speak about his experiences. April 29, First Church Congregational UCC, Fairfield: For the 33rd year in a row, the community comes together for a townside memorial to the Holocaust, with a featured speaker, the lighting of candles, and a children's chorus.
