Fireman's Carnival Kicks Off In Easton With Food, Fun, Rides

EASTON, Conn. — Many years ago, the women of Easton’s Siren Aide would race to the scene of fires and emergencies with coffee and refreshments to help those in need — even in the middle of the night.

Today, the group is largely part of Easton’s storied history. But the group keeps those at the Fireman's Carnival in Easton refreshed at the legendary dessert table.

“People come in every year and say, ‘I need to have that peach cobbler,’ ” said Easton resident David Wheatley, a volunteer with the fire department.

The Easton Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 is scheduled to hold its 74th Annual Carnival from Tuesday, July 28, to Saturday, Aug. 1. One of the community’s best-loved summer events — and main fundraiser for the town’s Volunteer Fire Company — the carnival takes place on the green in front of the Easton Fire House on Center Road.

Attractions include rides by Stewart Amusements of Trumbull, games, and bingo with cash prizes.

The carnival is also hosting a raffle for winner’s choice of a 2015 Ford Mustang or F150 Pickup Truck. With a maximum of 5,000 tickets sold, Wheatley said, “There’s a pretty good chance of winning.”

Aside from the dessert table, the event features the renowned “Firehouse” Cheesesteak Sandwich.

“We slow-roast [the beef] in the oven then we cook it fresh on the grill,” according to Wheatley.

The portion size is great for the money, he said.

“Nobody’s going away hungry after eating one of those,” he said.

Carnival-goers can buy an all-you-can-ride ticket for $25 per day, or purchase individual tickets for each ride. The price of tickets depends on the ride, Wheatley said.

Wheatley said in his years of going to carnival, his favorite part is seeing the smiles on kids’ faces.

“Everybody’s always happy at this carnival,” he said.

Home to nearly 7,500 residents, Easton is served by the mainly volunteer fire brigade. The fire company is made up of 18 certified volunteer firefighters and eight career firefighters, led by Chief Steve Waugh. In 2014, the Volunteer Fire Company responded to more than 471 incidents in Easton.
