Local Chef: Grady's Manhattan Cocktail

Grady Moredock has mastered the art of the cocktail. After spending years as a bartender, the affable Grady has enough spirited recipes to liven up any gathering. And while he guards some of them very tightly, he was willing to share one of his favorites with me on my recent visit to his home in Fairfield.

GRADY MOREDOCK: I'm old school! Give me a good old Manhattan any night. It's delicious, and easy to make.

MEAGHAN MORELLI: How long have you been behind the bar, and how did you get started?

GM: I started bartending in 1991, so 20 years. Wow! I got started while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was a young kid traveling around the country, stopping here or there for a few months at a time, and bartending was the perfect way to earn cash quickly.

MM: What's the secret to making a good cocktail?

GM: Knowing the ingredients! But really, it's all about the ratios.

MM: What’s the best part about bartending?

GM: For me it's about interacting with the customers. Meeting new people, hearing new stories every night. I met my wife tending bar, and we have 2 kids now. That is ultimately the best part about my 20 years as a bartender.
