Artists Take Drums for a Spin at Norwalk's JAM

Hyla Crane, Manirah Agans and Rosemary Suchoff tried something new this week: making art on spinning paper. "I loved it, and I hadn't thought of it before," said Agans. "It's just a wheel and paper."

Chris Tinnesz makes spin art all the time, but it was new to many of the visitors at Thursday's Art Spot Block Party, held at Junior Art and Music on Water Street. Tinnesz, an instructor there, has attached boards to fans, which he puts on their sides to create a spinning art surface. He also had a drum spinning, which attracted the three women.

Crane, director of education at Stepping Stones Museum for Children, loves JAM. "I just think this is great," she said. "They provide so much for children." Art lessons are unstructured, Crane said, and she likes that. "He's not telling them, he's letting them explore," she said of Tinnesz. Others said they were surprised it was an activity for adults as well. They liked the artistic freedom, too.

The Norwalk Arts Commission sponsors the Art Spot Block Party.
