Stamford Students Don Supportive Hats

Imagine having a child with cancer. The last things you'd want to think about are bills. That's why our hat goes off to students at Turn of River Middle School in Stamford, who put on their hats to raise awareness about childhood cancer. Students paid a small fee, 50 cents or more, to be allowed to wear a hat during school hours on Dec. 3.

Funds raised for the Foundation for Children with Cancer's Hats On Day supported the foundation's goal of offering monetary assistance to families of children who have cancer. The money helps with basic necessities such as utility bills and mortgage payments, giving families time to concentrate on treatment and recovery of their child. The hats are symbolic because people who lose their hair while undergoing cancer treatment often wear them.

The TOR students raised $250 with their project. The Rachel's Challenge After School Club at the school sponsored the event.

What do you think? Was this a good way to raise awareness about childhood cancer and support families?
