New Canaan Schools Keep Things Cool in the Heat

The hot, hot, hot weather in New Canaan means the staff at East Elementary School will be on the watch to keep the kids safe.

Students at East School went out on the playground Wednesday for recess, even as temperatures hovered at 90 degrees or more. Assistant Principal Lisa Singer said the school staff makes sure the kids remain properly hydrated on excessively hot days. Several East students at the last period had water bottles with them.

“They want to be outside. It’s good for them to get some fresh air,” Singer said. But if the heat index is too high Thursday, the school may keep the kids play indoors. East School, like the other four public schools in town, is air-conditioned. “We’ll wait and see what it looks like,” Singer said. “We’re always concerned about the kids on the playground.”

New Canaan Schools Superintendent David Abbey said the five public schools plan to remain open despite the heat, though Thursday’s outdoor field day at South Elementary School has been postponed until Friday.

The staff is “making sure the kids drink the right kinds of fluids,” Abbey said, meaning drinks that don’t have a lot of sugar. “We tell them to drink water, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. … We will be vigilant in respect to this. Given the extreme heat, we’re doing well.“
