The popular chain is offering free doughnuts (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage including their new Chips Ahoy! Crème and Chips Ahoy! Crunch doughnuts. The offer is good all day.

Lest you think this is just a gimmick, think again. The tradition started in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Other fun facts:

  • The largest doughnut ever made was in Utica, N.Y. It weighed 1.7 tons and measured 4.9 meters in diameter and 40.6 meters in height.
  • Police are often associated with doughnut shops. This is commonly attributed to the fact that doughnut shops were the only places open during late-night or early-morning shifts for police officers during the '40s and '50s.
  • Each year, over 10 billion doughnuts are made in the United States.
