9/11 Victims to be Honored at Somers Ceremony

SOMERS, N.Y. - Three benches in Bailey Park serve as reminders of the three Somers residents who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

George Bishop was employed by the Aon Corporation, with offices in the South Tower. He was one of 106 employees unable to evacuate in time.

Richard Klares worked for Marsh and McLennan in the North Tower. No one in his office survived the attack.

Joseph Spor, Jr. was a New York City firefighter and on duty that day, responding as a member of Rescue Company 3.

Families, friends and neighbors will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks on Sunday, September 11, along with the many officials and townsfolk who want to pay homage. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at Bailey Park in the Somers Unity Garden.

Bagpipers Robert and Pam Matuszewski will pipe in the honor guard, comprising members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jewish War Veterans, American Legion, Somers Volunteer Fire Department, Somers Police Department, New York State Police Department, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

A Poetry Reading by the Spor family will be followed by guest speakers, Police Chief Michael Driscoll and Fire ex-Chief Robert Weinstein.

The placement of flowers and wreathes will be next, followed by a candlelight ceremony, led by Monsignor Moore of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Fr. Sandy Key, Chaplain of the Somers Fire Department, will read the Invocation and Rabbi Fred Schwalb of the Somers Hebrew Congregation will read the Benediction. Elysa Boniello will sing the National Anthem and “God Bless America.”
