Rams Return to Lacrosse Title Game

New Canaan has played in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference boys lacrosse championship game 19 times, but has not won a title since 2003. The Rams can end that drought Friday night.

New Canaan reached the FCIAC title game with a convincing 11-3 victory Tuesday over St. Joseph in the semifinals at Brien McMahon. The third-seeded Rams (15-3) will play No. 5 Greenwich for the title Friday at 7:30 p.m. at McMahon.

The Rams set the tone early Tuesday, as Oliver Norton scored three minutes into the game. New Canaan built a 3-0 lead on goals by Patrick Ryan and Sam Stanton later in the first period, increased the margin to 7-1 and cruised to the victory. Norton had four goals while Stanton, Joseph Costigan and Cody Newton had two apiece.

"We came out and wanted to dictate tempo,'' New Canaan coach Alex Whitten said. "Our defense stepped up and played well. (St. Joseph) didn't get anything going at all."

New Canaan last played in the FCIAC championship game in 2007. Its last title was in 2003, when the Rams defeated Darien. Whitten will be coaching in his first league championship, but he is no stranger to the pressure. He played for his father, Guy, at Wilton High School and helped the team win three state championships. He also coached Weston to a state championship in 2007.
