Metro Center Construction Set to Begin

The town is just about ready to break ground on a project that has been 10 years in the making, a third train station and metro center, located in Black Rock, according to First Selectman Ken Flatto.

Flatto told the RTM this week that Guerrera Construction Co. of Oxford is the likely favorite to receive the bid for construction on the project. The company made a bid of $19.97 million, the lowest of 10 submitted.

"Our belief is the budget is intact and the bid will be awarded, very, very soon," Flatto said, adding that the town's purchasing department and the project's commission needs a little more time to due its due diligence and work with the state, which as a joint partner on the project also has to approve the bid.

Meanwhile, public portions of the work could begin as soon as the end of July. Guerrera or another company will take about 16 months to complete the public work, which includes site work, grading, utilities, drainage, retaining walls, remediation and capping of contaminated material, wetland mitigation and the surface parking lot for train commuters. The state Department of Transportation will be building a motor vehicle bridge and platforms for the train station.

Black Rock Realty, LLC will be in charge of the private construction, which is slated to include office buildings, a 180-room hotel space and retail space.

The new Metro Center should have parking for around 1,300 to 1,500 commuters, which will help alleviate the crowded parking lots at the town's other two stations.
