Skating Event Raises $6,600 for Charity

The Darien Winter Club’s sixth annual Charity Skate at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford raised more than $6,600 for the emergency assistance program at Person-to-Person.

With each participant making a donation and Terry Conners donating ice time to Person-to-Person, all proceeds went to the foundation. Since the first Charity Skate in 2006, the Darien Winter Club has collected nearly $34,000 for the Darien-based charity.

“We are grateful to be the beneficiaries of this event,” Ceci Maher, executive director of Person-to-Person, said in a press release. “It allows us to help the people who come to us for assistance with food, clothing and shelter.”

This summer the charity is trying to fund a program to help families that qualify for the federally provided free lunch at schools by sending them extra food now that school is out, the release said. Several thousand children in Stamford receive the free lunch, the press release said.

“Our goal is to help 400 families by giving them groceries for one week of meals in July and August,” Maher said in the release.

The Darien Winter Club is a private hockey club for men 30 and older in Fairfield and Westchester counties.
