Scarsdale Official to Address Quality of Education

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Scarsdale school officials often point out that the village’s schools are among the best in the nation. But how is that quality measured? And how does Scarsdale stack up against the rest of the world? This topic will be addressed Tuesday evening when Assistant Superintendent Lynne Shain delivers a report at the Board of Education of the Scarsdale Union Free School District meeting.

Shain’s presentation is titled “Is Scarsdale Offering a World Class Education?  How Do We Know?”

“We know that Scarsdale is one of the top-performing school districts in the country,” Shain said, “but we could not find any existing methods for assessing the effectiveness of our teaching higher-order thinking. PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) and others like it compare tests, but don't give you a sense of the curriculum that built the capacity of the students being tested."

“We are in the third year of this study,” she said. “In the first year, Teachers College (at Columbia University) documented and codifies critical and creative thinking examples in Scarsdale classrooms. In the second year, TC took that methodology on the road to schools in Australia, Singapore and Canada. This year, classrooms in Finland and Shanghai are being studied.”

The public is invited to attend the 8 p.m. business meeting and speak at designated times in the Multipurpose Room of Edgewood Elementary School (One Roosevelt Place, Scarsdale). The business meeting will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. school visit to Edgewood by the board and a 7:15 p.m. open meeting of board members with parents and the Edgewood community in the Multipurpose Room at Edgewood.

It is expected that the board will adjourn into executive session at the conclusion of the business meeting to discuss personnel matters.
