Greenwich Girl Wins League Cross Country Crown

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich senior Abby Markowitz patiently waited to make her move in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference cross country championships Monday at Waveny Park. It was not by design.

Pushed virtually the entire way, Markowitz pulled ahead with about 800 meters to go to win the league title in 14:55. She won by five seconds over Westhill’s Nicole Ambrosecchio.

“It made it a lot harder mentally,’’ Markowitz said of being unable to break free from the pack. “I went into it knowing it would be a hard race. Once I got out of the woods I knew there was only 800 meters left and it was almost over.”

Markowitz came in as the pre-race favorite after going undefeated during the regular season against FCIAC runners. But she couldn’t establish any distinct advantage early in the race, and even past the midway point Ambrosecchio, Wilton’s Alosha Southern, Darien’s Grace Loh and Westhill’s Claire Howlett were hot on her heels.

“There were so many people out front,’’ Markowitz said. “It was back and forth for a while.”

Markowitz finally pulled ahead, and there was no reeling her in. Her victory helped Greenwich finish second behind Ridgefield for the girls title. The Tigers won with 65 points, while Greenwich finished with 77. Wilton (93), Westhill (98) and Darien (125) rounded out the top five.
