HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Former Hastings resident Vera Kobasiar died on Oct. 31 at the age of 85.
An active member of the Ukrainian American Citizens Club of Hastings-on-Hudson, she was born in Kiev, Ukraine on Dec. 12, 1925 to Onesko and Horpina Tkashenko. During World War II, she was held in a labor camp from 1942 to 1947. After the war, Kobasiar moved to Venezuela and eventually the U.S. in 1955.
Kobasiar was a parishioner of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church and a member of St. Anne's Society, Golden Agers Club and Suma. Kobasiar enjoyed participating in local organizations as well as supporting those in Ukraine.
She is survived by her godchildren Irene Pecylak Hess and Mike Kuchera and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Michael Kobasiar and her sisters Paraska and Matrona.
Visitation hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Yonkers Funeral Service, with a Panakhyda service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yonkers. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.
