ARMONK, N.Y. - Armonk parents Allyson Wolland and Deborah Goldman showed up to Coman Hill Elementary School Thursday in their pajamas. And they weren't alone.
Close to 500 elementary students also wore their sleeping attire to school to celebrate an accomplishment of giving, orchestrated largely by Goldman and Wolland.
"Despite the power outages from the snow, these students found the time to reach out and help others by donating pajamas and books," Wolland said.
The Pajama Program rolled a big yellow bus onto the school's grounds and had each grade, from kindergarten through second, help load the bus with books and pajamas to donate to local children in need and celebrate the act of giving.
The students at Coman Hill donated a total of 150 pairs of pajamas and more than 500 books to local children.
"Coman Hill does an amazing job for us," said Pajama Program Founder Genevieve Piturro of Irvington. "I come to the schools to thank the students. It's the best part because I get to meet the kids and tell them about the good they did."
Wolland and Goldman are parent coordinators for the school's PTSA community service committee and helped organize the donation initiatives at Coman Hill and Wampus Elementary School as well.
"Our goal is to teach children to give back and it went incredibly well," Wolland said. "We're so proud of what the kids came together to accomplish."
In a celebratory fashion, hundreds of students pitched in to help load the program's bus with bags of pajamas and books, all the while chanting "stuff the bus" in unison.
Wolland and Goldman worked closely with Coman Hill Principal Carol Fisher to help orchestrate the school-wide donations.
"We were so excited to be a part of this over the last few years," Fisher said.
