Weston Residents Collecting Treats for Troops

WESTON, Conn. ? Weston resident Lyn Milliman has just the place to send the candy you didn't get give away because of the Halloween snow storm - the United States Army.

This is the fourth year in a row that Milliman has collected unused candy from Weston and sent it off to soldiers deployed in Afghanistan. The tradition began when she sent candy to her nephew while he was serving in Iraq. Milliman has since sent hundreds of pounds of Halloween candy to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Halloween candy is a big hit with the troops any time of year,” Milliman said. “It’s an easy way to show our gratitude for the sacrifices they make, and the soldiers are so appreciative of the gesture that it is humbling.”

This year, Milliman is getting help from Weston Supports the Troops, a volunteer organization that oversees the town’s partnership with the U.S. Army’s Blackhawk Brigade, a combat unit of more than 4,000 soldiers.

This year’s candy will be sent to the men and women of the Blackhawk Brigade, who are not only currently serving in Afghanistan, but have already done previous tours in Iraq.

Milliman set up various drop off locations for candy around town, including the Weston Public Library and at Weston Intermediate School.

Anyone wishing to donate candy or help cover shipping costs can contact Jane Young-Anglim of Weston Supports the Troops at  203-221-1969 or Lyn Milliman at  203-557-0185.
