Weston to Weigh Changing Budget Deadlines

WESTON, Conn. – The Charter Revision Commission is in budget mode. At its meeting Wednesday the panel will consider changing submission deadlines to allow  the boards of education and selectmen more time to prepare their budgets.

The commission has been tasked with going through the charter and coming up with a consensus on sections that should be changed, updated or made more readable.

Here are some of the items they are expected to discuss Wednesday:

Section 8.1. stipulates that each agency of the town must provide to the First Selectman, on or before Jan. 14, a statement of estimated expenses and revenue for the next fiscal year.

  • Question: Is this an appropriate date or should it be changed?

Section 8.1 also requires that agencies provide the First Selectman with the work accomplished during the current fiscal year.

  • Question: Is this provision in fact followed?

Section 8.2. says the First Selectman must submit the First Selectman's budget to the Board of Selectmen by Feb. 10.

  • Question: Is this deadline appropriate, or should it be revised?

Section 8.3. provides that the Board of Selectmen must present the proposed budget to the Board of Finance not later than Feb. 25.

  • Question: Is this deadline appropriate, or should it be revised?

Section 8.4. specifies the procedure for approval of the budget.

  • Question: What should the process be for approving the budget?

The Charter Revision Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room, 56 Norfield Road.
