Queens Man Arrested in Scarsdale Assault

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A Queens man was arrested Sunday morning, Jan. 15, and charged with criminal trespass, criminal mischief and harassment. Casey J. Bennett, 33, was accused of forcing his way into a Scarsdale man's home and attacking him.

According to a Scarsdale police report, an anonymous Scarsdale taxi driver called police at 6:43 a.m. and said he had dropped an "undesirable" off at an Old Lyme Road address and that the man was banging on the door of the home and demanding to be let in. When police arrived, the man was on the lawn and the resident was on his neighbor's property.

The report stated that the resident had known Bennett for about six years and that he had given Bennett money for medicine during that time. The two had arranged to meet at a Bronx subway stop at 1:30 a.m. so Bennett could get more money, the resident told police, but Bennett did not show up.

About 6:30 a.m., he told police, Bennett came to his home, forced his way in and assaulted him, throwing him to the floor. The man said he was not hurt, but Bennett suffered a twisted ankle and was taken for treatment to White Plains Hospital. Following treatment he was arraigned in Scarsdale and held in Westchester County jail on $1,500 cash bail.

Fire starters: Police responded to a Heathcote Road address at 12:02 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the location. Upon arrival, Scarsdale Fire Department was on the scene, and police spoke to workers who said they started two small fires to keep warm. Firefighters told them to put out the fires, and police watched as they were extinguished.

Not tool time: Police responded to a Ridgecrest East address at 8:40 a.m. Monday to check out a complaint of workers using power tools prior to 10 a.m., a violation village code. Upon arrival, police witnessed a violation and issued a summons to Lee M. Handler of Scarsdale.

Gas leak probe: Scarsdale Police, Scarsdale firefighters and Con Edison workers responded at 12:28 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, to a report of a gas leak in the vicinity of Rural Drive. Police stood by while firefighters and Con Ed workers entered two Rural Drive homes and four Lincoln Road homes to check for the leak. The two Rural Drive homes were entered without residents present.

Ring and run: Police responded to two locations after 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, to answer complaints of youths ringing doorbells or knocking on doors and running away. After failing to locate anyone following calls from Brewster Road, police found several youths following complaints on Overlook Road just before midnight. According to the police report, the youths admitted ringing doorbells and running away, and their parents were called to take custody.

Noisy kids: A Post Road resident told police at 2:20 a.m. Saturday that about 10 youths were on her property making noise. She told police the youths ran off when she turned on outside lights and opened her front door. Police could not locate the youths.

Home burglary: A Fairview home resident woke up Thursday morning, Jan. 12, to find that overnight, a thief or thieves had entered her home and taken several items from the kitchen and living room.

According to the Scarsdale police report, the resident said she went to bed about 12:05 a.m. and, about 6 a.m., she awoke and found a rear door ajar. The woman, who said she might have left the door unlocked, told police an iPhone4, and iPod Touch and a Nintendo 3DS had been charging in the kitchen and were missing. Also, she told police, $100 had been removed from her pocketbook. Credit cards, a checkbook, a laptop computer and two cameras were left behind.

According to the police report, there were several family members home at the time, but no one heard or saw anything suspicious.
