Stamford Police Captain Honored as Crime Fighter

STAMFORD, Conn. — For his assistance on federal investigations, including high-profile cases involving organized-crime figures, Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin has been honored by U.S. Attorney David B. Fein.

“He has quietly and consistently supported and, in many cases, motivated every successful long-term federal wiretap prosecution that our office has conducted in Stamford over the years,” a program from the Jan. 20 award ceremony said.

“This is not just about me, but all of the men and women in the Stamford Police Department,” Conklin said of receiving the Outstanding Partnership Award.

Although he has assisted in many federal, state, and local investigations during his 30-year career with the Stamford Department, Conklin said a few stand out in his mind. He cited last year's probe of a local branch of the Latin Kings during which 150 firearms, including 13 automatic machine guns, were seized and more than 20 arrests were made.

Conklin said he also took part in investigations of the Gambino and Genovese crime families that lead to an estimated 100 arrests. He said he is particularly proud of busting Anthony Megale, who was the top person in Connecticut for the Gambino family.

Conklin joined the Stamford Police Department because he felt the excitement or police work would mesh with his personality. He added that it was an added bonus that he would be able to help people.

“In this position, I could really do some good,” he said.
