North Salem Teens Wanted for Community Service

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The North Salem School District prides itself on teaching good values and responsible civic behavior, from a child’s earliest kindergarten days right through to high school graduation day.

The North Salem Middle/High School is holding a Community Service Awareness Program during the month of October. Representatives from different local organizations are setting up tables at the school during lunch to recruit student volunteers. After completing 30 hours of service, students can put it on their transcripts.

On Wednesday, the Community Service Awareness Program at the Middle/High School will feature Friends of Karen and the North Salem Youth Group. Friends of Karen, based in Purdys, provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with a life-threatening illness and their families.

Karen MacInnes died in 1979 at the age of 16 from Lafona's Disease. The organization was started in 1983.

Denise Tredwell, volunteer coordinator for Friends of Karen, said the organization encourages teens to work within their own community. For example, they can put together food baskets for Thanksgiving or collect holiday gift wrapping.

“We need coloring books and crayons. Even older kids like to color when they are in the hospital. It is very soothing," she said.  "We love kids helping kids. We’ve had lots of support from North Salem, but we can always use more, especially from teenagers. Friends of Karen is right in their backyard."

And Karen lived in North Salem, so it is especially significant.

Information tables for Friends of Karen and the North Salem Youth Group will be arranged in the high school cafeteria during lunch hours.

The Croton Falls Fire Department and the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, scheduled to visit the school for Community Service Awareness on Thursday, have rescheduled to Tuesday, October 18.
