Cards Still Deliver for Winning Stamford Students

The student winners of Stamford Public School's Holiday Greeting Card Contest gathered with their family and friends in the mayor's office Wednesday for a formal ceremony with Mayor Michael Pavia, first lady Maureen Pavia and Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr.

The mayor's top choice was by fifth-grader Amanda Friedman from Northeast Elementary School.

"This event always makes me happy," Pavia said. "It's always a pleasure to recognize the student artists who designed the cards that the superintendent and I will use this holiday season."

Starr said, "This was the hardest year I've had to pick a winner." He said 262 elementary students took part in this year in the 15th annual contest.

Presenting the mayor's choice was Maureen Pavia, who said, "With art and music we all have a different interpretation. So it is with all these talented young artists."

The mayor's two runners-up were Arlennis Meson, also in fifth grade at Northeast Elementary, and John McDonald, a fifth-grader at Westover Magnet School.

The winner of the superintendent's holiday card was Jake Heerman, a fifth-grader at Newfield Elementary School. The two runners-up were Christina Ninivaggi, a second-grader at Springdale Elementary, and Megan Ferreira, a fifth-grader at Newfield Elementary.

All the entries in this year's contest are displayed in the lobby of the Government Center throughout the holidays.
