Long Island Man Charged With Shooting Female Housemate In Overnight Dispute

A man is behind bars after shooting his housemate during an overnight dispute on Long Island, police said.

It happened on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at approximately 2:40 a.m. in Wyandanch.

Steven Merriman, 59, was having a dispute with a female occupant of the home, located at 82 Irving Ave., when he shot her in the arm, Suffolk County Police said. 

The woman, 36, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries, said police.

First Squad detectives arrested and charged Merriman with second-degree assault. Additional charges are pending. He will be held overnight at the First Precinct and will be arraigned on Thursday, Jan. 2 at First District Court in Central Islip.
