A 90-year-old woman in Suffolk County became the third novel coronavirus-related death reported on Long Island.

Officials said the woman died late on Monday, March 16 at Huntington Hospital, where she had been isolated after testing positive. She had suffered from underlying medical conditions prior to contracting the virus.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said the first man who died at St. Catherine’s Hospital from COVID-19 was in his 80s and the second man was in his 90s isolated at Huntington Hospital.

Both men also suffered from underlying illnesses before testing positive for COVID-19.

There have now been more than 100 reported positive COVID-19 cases in Nassau County and more than 75 in Suffolk County. Hundreds are in self-imposed or mandatory quarantine after possibly being exposed to the virus.

“We have known from the onset of this outbreak that our older residents are more susceptible to this virus and our hearts break for the families who have lost loved ones,” Bellone said. “We need to prevent more tragedies like this from occurring, so the public must continue to heed our warnings and remain vigilant when it comes to slowing the spread of this virus and protecting our most vulnerable populations.”
