Westport Mocks Itself on Stage for Good Cause

It isn't often that members of a town's legislative body poke fun at themselves or at their town. But on Saturday, that's exactly what members of Westport's Representative Town Meeting and other town organizations will be doing in the musical comedy spoof, "Forbidden Westport III: Beaches, Bankers, Barons & Budgets."

The show, presented by the Westport Sunrise Rotary, takes a stab at some of Westport's biggest issues and many town bodies, including the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Education and, of course, the Planning and Zoning Commission. But it's all for a good cause.

Net proceeds from the event will benefit Homes with Hope, a Westport nonprofit that focuses on solving homelessness through supportive housing.

Outside of the Representative Town Meeting, members of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Westport Young Woman's League and Green Village Initiative will be performing. Other cast members include Homes With Hope President Jeff Wieser, the Rev. Jeffrey Rider of Green's Farms Church, Rabbi Robert Orkand of Temple Israel and Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon.

"We thought this was such a great community event," said Kristin LaFleur of the Woman's League. She and other league members Elizabeth Juviler and Meg Himes explore the stereotype of Westport women in their musical number.

"The Westport Woman's League does a lot to support Homes With Hope, and we thought this was a great way to continue helping them out and have fun."

These town representatives will be joined on stage by many Broadway and off-Broadway professionals, including Karen Parrella, Eva Rawiszer, David Rogers, Bill Hall, June Walker Rogers, Chilton Ryan, Katie Sparer, Suzanne Tanner, Cindy Vaccaro, Richard Weidlich and Nadine Willig. There will also be a special musical presentation by Richard Epstein and Bob Lasprogato of "Uptown Jazz."

The show, created by longtime Westport resident John Franklin, will be performed Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Bedford Middle School auditorium. Ticket prices are $55 or $20 for students. Tickets can be purchased from any Sunrise Rotary member, at Fairfield County Bank in Westport, online or at the door.
