'Raging' Activists Sing During Mt. Kisco Town Hall

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Adorned in wide-brim hats and colorful clothing, a group of women sang a song targeting State Senator Greg Ball’s (C,R – Patterson) stance against gay marriage as he ended his town hall tour in Mt. Kisco on Monday night.

Just as Senator Ball was thanking the board of trustees, three women broke out in song. Ball quickly exited and the women followed him into the lobby. They could be heard singing from the room where the meeting was taking place.

The singers were members of the Lower Hudson Valley chapter of the Raging Grannies, an international activist group known as Raging Grannies WOWW. The group is perhaps best known for its many appearances at public hearings calling for the shutdown of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

Member Sunny Armer, said the group writes and sings songs at a number of meetings and events to help raise awareness about specific issues.

Nora Freeman, another member of the organization and demonstrator at the Monday meeting, said the song they performed was written in support of equality because Ball voted against the same-sex marriage bill last month.

"No matter who the bad guys are, they're always good on some issues," Armer said. “He's certainly good on some issues." Armer and the rest of the group applauded Ball for his stance on “hydro-fracking,” a method of extracting natural gas, for which he is against, based on the potential threat of contaminating watershed.

Besides their sharp lyrics, the trio of ladies held signs that read "44 states to go!,” “I am a gay Muslim Mexican..." and "A happy and blessed Ramadan to all..." referencing several of Ball's policies that the Raging Grannies disagree with, including terrorism and equal rights.
