Tarrytown DoubleTree Recognizes Pupil Achievement

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – If you doubt going to school every day can pay off, two students from Washington Irving School have news for you: It can. The two fifth-graders, Marbelin Diaz and Jose Esteves, found out last month that a two-year streak of perfect attendance does have its benefits when they were given a Barnes & Noble Nook, courtesy of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tarrytown.

In June, the Hotel’s Conference Service Manager, Frances Duenas, volunteered to present the reading devices to the two (very!) lucky fifth-graders for achieving perfect attendance.

The gifts were sponsored by the hotel’s CARE Committee (Caring, Attentiveness, Responsiveness and Empowerment), a DoubleTree by Hilton initiative to be involved in the community.

“My children went to the Washington Irving School,” Duenas said, “and I know it’s not an easy task to get up and to school every day—I wanted to be part of that.”

The Doubletree by Hilton Tarrytown employee committee members hope the friendly pat-on-the-back will lead to the youngsters finding something to strive for.

“Whether it be perfect attendance or other action, it’s nice to be recognized for [something positive],” she said.

At the end of the presentation, Duenas reminded the students that the Nooks were not toys. She said, “It’s a wonderful way to jump-start work on summer reading lists.”
