Port Authority doubles fines for toll cheats who slip through E-zpass lanes

The Port Authority is doubling the fine for the 2 percent of toll evaders who blow through E-ZPass lanes to get out of Jersey. Officials with the agency say they’re not doing it to siphon more dollars into their tank. Rather, they said, they’re trying to get more people to open E-ZPass accounts — and, in turn, improve “traffic flow.”

But consider this: Records show the authority raked in $6.5 million in toll-evasion fees last year. Now double that.

The fine hike, which takes effect in November, doesn’t take into account the vast numbers of people who, for legitimate, constitutional reasons, don’t want to hand authorities a way to track their comings and goings.
