West Point Army Major Plans Weston Lecture On General Pershing

WESTON, Conn. -- The Weston Historical Society will present Maj. Andrew Forney, an instructor of American history at West Point, as he lectures on “The Strange Careers of General Pershing and the U.S. Army.”

The lecture will be on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m., at the historical society’s museum, 104 Weston Road.

The lecture is part of the society’s “World War I Remembrance” series. Forney is an instructor of American History in the Department of History at the U.S. Military Academy.

He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 2002 and entered the Armor Branch of the U.S. Army. He served in operational assignments around the world, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Knox, Ky. On his two most recent assignments, he served as an operations and intelligence mentor for the Afghan National Police in Farah Province and as a troop commander of an Advanced Individual Training (AIT) Cavalry Troop in Fort Knox.

Forney earned a master’s degree from Texas Christian University in 2011 and completed All But Dissertation (ABD) requirements in 2012. His specialty is the American Federalist Era, as well as studying cultural and social issues throughout the nation’s history.

He has written articles, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries for numerous scholarly journals and books. 

The Weston Historical Society is hosting Forney as part of its exhibition “World War I Remembrance.” The museum is open on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. for a viewing of the exhibition, including many artifacts belonging to Weston families, which brings the historical drama to the local stage.
