Fairfield County Eateries Grab Mardi Gras Spirit

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. --- Forget about the cold with hot Cajun fare in honor of Fat Tuesday. For those not able to make it to Mardi Gras this year, there are plenty of places in Fairfield County to satisfy your Southern cravings -- and bite into a small ray of New Orleans sunshine.

Mardi Gras will be celebrated at Two Boots in Bridgeport.

Here's a sampling:

Two Boots, Bridgeport: Free beads, masks and, of course, drink specials are on hand for Two Boots' Mardi Gras celebration. Your taste of New Orleans includes jambalaya, fried catfish fritters and gumbo, and live music -- not to mention a Hurricane collectible cup for a few dollars more. The party starts at 6 p.m. Spice Things Up: 281 Fairfield Ave., 203-331-1377, www.twobootsbridgeport.com.

Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge, Norwalk: Southern hospitality is front and center at this locally sourced eatery where the regular menu (hello corn-cheddar grit cakes and low country bouillabaisse!) will be served alongside Hurricane specials, rum punches, and gumbo. There will also be plenty of giveaways, including beads and masks. Spice Things Up: 19 N. Water St., 203-956-7171, www.mamasboyct.com.

The Spread, South Norwalk: Crawfish will be flown up live from Louisiana in preparation for Chef Carlos' blowout blast to the Crescent City. Also on tap: Blackened alligator nuggets, stuffed jalapenos, seafood jambalaya, Abita Beer and Hurricane cocktails. There will also be a DJ, beads and more. Spice Things Up: 70 N. Main St., 203-939-1111, www.thespreadsono.com.

And while beignets may be scarce, there's always pazcki, a jelly doughnut that is a Polish Fat Tuesday tradition sold at Stew Leonard's, as well as king cake, which Billy's Bakery in Fairfield promises to have on hand when it opens at 6 a.m.
