FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Despite threats of terror attacks, Sony has announced that the controversial film "The Interview" will be shown in select theaters on Christmas Day, including some close to home in Yonkers, N.Y., Waterbury and Hartford, according to a report by Deadline.com.

The controversial film "The Interview" will still be screening in some area movies.

Sony also released the movie in paid, online rentals on Wednesday.

The change of decision in releasing the film came about during a conference call with Sony executives, the report said.

The closest theaters showing the movie are:

  • Front Street Stadium, Hartford
  • Apple Cinemas, Waterbury
  • The Alamo, Yonkers.

The first Yonkers showing, at midnight, is already sold out, according to The Alamo's website.

Sony announced a week ago that it has canceled the planned Dec. 25 release of the movie after a hacking attack and threats against theaters that planned to show the movie.

That decision came after several major cinemas dropped the film, a comedy which focuses on a pair of TV journalists, played by actors James Franco and Seth Rogen, who are recruited by the CIA in a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The U.S. government has blamed the North Korean government for the hacking attack.
