They are part of a 2015 UMass-Boston Marathon team running under the name “Running for a Reason: Krystle’s Legacy.” The team is raising money for a scholarship at the University of Massachusetts in memory of Krystle Campbell. She was one of three people -- along with 23-year-old Lingzi Lu and 8-year-old Martin Richard -- who were killed by bombs planted by brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
James Duval is a seventh grade math teacher at the Brunswick School, while Sally Duval is an athletic coach at Greenwich Academy.
When they both ran in the 2005 Boston Marathon, Sally Duval said that it would be her last one.
"When I crossed the finish line, I was so exhausted that I said I would never do it again," she said with a laugh.
However, after the 2013 bombing, Duval decided to run it again.
"I thought it was important to show that we can do this, that we will continue to have it," she said of the Boston Marathon.
Duval also has first hand experience of a terrible loss from terrorism: Her brother Teddy was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
James Duval said the Boston Marathon is special for him as a native of Winchester, Mass., a community outside Boston. He has run in every marathon since 2005.
"I'm honored to be part of the fundraising team, and I am doing it because it is a great cause," said Duval, who has run the race nine times with his father, Lou.
Sally said they connected with the UMass team because her father, Edward, is a friend of Richard Campbell, the driving force behind the scholarship. (Campbell is not related to Krystle Campbell.)
Both are former college hockey players, Sally at Harvard and James at Brown. James went on to a professional career at the minor professional ranks in North America and overseas.
