The winter night sky is fading fast and the spring constellations are starting to rise. The show will begin at 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
During the program, astronomers will have the telescopes trained on the spring constellations. There will be a last peek at Jupiter as it sets in the west. Saturn will begin taking center stage, rising in the east before sunset. All ages welcome to come and enjoy the magnificent views.
The New Pond Farm observatory is perched on top of the knoll in a pasture, and Redding has some of the darkest skies in Fairfield County. A team of amateur astronomers offer the monthly programs to view the night sky.
New Pond Farm has several telescopes on hand. Thanks to grants from Redding Education Foundation and the Meserve Memorial Fund, it also purchased a 14-inch Celestron telescope. Its large diameter allows viewers to observe celestial objects, including star clusters and galaxies, in detail.
Dress warmly and bring a flashlight for the walk from the parking area to the observatory. If you wish, bring along a lawn chair, binoculars and insect repellent.
The cost is $4 for members of the Discovery Center or New Pond Farm with a maximum of $16 per family, or $6 for nonmembers with $24 maximum for a family.
New Pond Farm is located at 101 Marchant Road, West Redding. Park at the Learning Center lot and walk to the observatory.
