Twenty-six trees will be planted at Oyster Shell Park in the coming weeks to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last December. The trees, and their upkeep, are being donated by North Haven-based SouthGate Nurserymen LLC, one of the companies that worked on Oyster Shell Park.
The trees will either be Ginkgo Bilobas or White Oaks, both of which can handle the region’s climate and feature beautiful foliage in the fall. Additionally, the trees are disease- and pest-resistant and will live and grow for years.
Accompanying the trees will be a small plaque carrying the names of the 26 victims and as yet unselected inspirational quote. The Norwalk Common Council approved the gift of the trees earlier this week.
The exact location for the trees has not yet been settled, but SouthGate suggests to the left of the park’s pathway up the hill, evenly spaced, which would not block the park’s waterfront views.
“We fee, the design and completion of Oyster Shell Park was a great success for the many people who will enjoy the park for years to come,” said Mike DiNello of SouthGate Nurserymen.
