The Weston Volunteer Fire Department needs your help keeping hydrants clear of snow and shrubbery that can make them hard to find in an emergency. It has announced an Adopt-A-Hydrant program for Weston citizens.
"This year's numerous snowstorms have kept firefighters busy shoveling snow for days," said Chief John Pokorny. "Hydrants were buried under piles of snow and would have taken precious minutes to locate in the event of a fire. Citizens can now help by adopting a hydrant to make sure it is easily accessible throughout the year."
The program consists of shoveling the area around the "adopted" hydrant after the plows have cleared the road, said volunteer firefighter Mark Blake. Firefighter Todd Buccaro coordinated the program, and says a "path of approximately three feet should be cleared so that the hydrant is visible and accessible."
He added that the small amount of time spent to dig out the hydrant could pay dividends later. "Clearing the hydrant will benefit the entire neighborhood," he said.
The department is also asking residents to consider clearing snow from a hydrant for a neighbor who may have a medical condition or disability, or for an elderly person who is unable to shovel snow.
During the summer months it will be important to clear the same three foot path around the hydrant, keeping it free of weeds and shrubbery. Anyone interested in participating or who would like additional information can contact the fire department at (203) 222-2647 or email adoptahydrant@wvfd.com.
