Each month, WYS picks a topic for its “Tackling the Tough Stuff” series of lectures and seminars for Weston parents raising adolescents. May’s theme is “Mothers as Models and Father Figures,” focusing on the changing roles of men and women in the 21st century.

“We hope these conversations will give you some tips and tools to nurture the next generation of strong and secure men and women,” Weston Youth Services Director Michelle Albright said in a statement.

The next seminar in the series will be Tuesday evening, May 21, starting at 7 p.m. at the Weston Field Club. Psychotherapist Richard Sussman will lead a talk titled “Fathering for fathers (and mothers too).” The discussion will focus on how fathers can act as strong role models for how their sons and daughters will relate to their future partners.

“Come hear the paternal perspective on how to raise strong, smart, and sensitive children,” the statement says.

Another talk is scheduled for May 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The lunch session will discuss “Dating Drama,” or building healthy relationships free of domestic violence or abuse. Two representatives from PeaceWorks, a prevention education program by the Domestic Violence Crisis Center of Connecticut, will lead the discussion.

In June, WYS will host a special event in honor of the 50th anniversary the publication of Betty Friedan’s feminist work “The Feminine Mystique.” Weston High School Vice Principal and University of Connecticut adjunct professor Michael Marotto will lead a discussion on the book’s legacy. That event will take place June 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Weston Public Library’s Community Room.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Weston Youth Services website.
