8 Weston Students Hurt in Westport Bus Crash

WESTPORT, Conn. – Eight Weston school children were injured Monday morning when a Weston Public School bus struck a low hanging branch in Westport, Westport police said.

The school bus was traveling south on Lyons Plains Road when it struck a branch near Tuck Lane around 8:25 a.m. On impact, three of the windows on the right side of the bus broke, causing debris to fly inside, police said.

Eight of the 36 students on board were treated for minor injuries such as scrapes, cuts and bruises, Westport EMS confirmed. No students were transported to the hospital.

A staging area for parents was set up at the Unitarian Church at 10 Lyons Plains Road. All of the children were released to either their parents or to Weston Public School officials after being evaluated by Westport and Weston EMS, police said.

Lyons Plains Road at Riverfield and Coleytown roads was closed to traffic for about an hour. The Weston Police Department is assisting Westport police with the investigation.

Last November, a Westport school bus carrying 23 Coleytown Elementary students crashed into a tree just over the Westport-Weston line on Lyons Plains Road. Some students in that accident also received minor injuries. The driver of that bus was later charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and failure to drive in the proper lane.
