A barge carrying oversized construction equipment caused some rare bridge openings on the Norwalk River during Tuesday's lunch hour. The Stroffolino Bridge, which is frequently opened during the summer boating season, was up for several minutes as the tug-propelled barge passed underneath, backing up traffic on Washington and Water Streets. The barge then waited south of the Maritime Aquarium as two Amtrak trains passed over the railroad swing bridge, which then pivoted on its axis to allow the barge to proceed upriver. That span, which is significantly higher than the Stroffolino Bridge, is seldom opened.
Whenever someone wants to have the bridge opened they have to call Metro North, which will schedule it. The Norwalk bridge is the busiest of the four moveable bridges on the New Haven Line because it has commercial and private boat traffic. Still, the bridge has opened just twice so far this month - including once today.
