WESTON, Conn. — The state is scheduled to close one of the busiest roadways in Weston for a bridge construction project that will take all summer.

The Route 57 bridge is slated for reconstruction.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will close Route 57 at the junction of Route 53 from July 1 until Sept. 15 to replace the bridge.

Weston First Selectwoman Gayle Weinstein said the project will cause massive traffic tie-ups, but “unfortunately we have no choice.”

“I am glad the state is stepping up to replace aging infrastructure in Weston,” Weinstein told The Daily Voice. “Hopefully, the state will do their best to get this bridge completed on time so it is not to cause tremendous issues when school starts.”

State Rep. John Shaban (R) whose district includes Weston, said there are a few ongoing bridge and road projects in town, but this one will "be a little tougher."

“It’s at a sweet spot of a lot of different roads,” he said.

The good news, Shaban said, is that the bridge is getting fixed. The bad news, however, is the inconvenience.

Motorists will be detoured from Route 57 onto Route 53 (Norfield Road – Cedar Road – Chestnut Hill Road) to Routes 7 & 33 (Danbury Road) to School Street back onto Route 57. CONNDOT said through trucks will be prohibited from using Route 33 to Route 53.

The $2.6 million project is scheduled to run from June 25 to Oct. 26.

McNamee Construction Corp. of Lincolndale, N.Y., was awarded the $2,688,935.90 contract for the construction project.

The existing structure was built in 1933, according to CONNDOT.
