The Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport, a nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence, operates Kathie's Place, a safehouse named after Kathleen Durst, the accused killer's wife who went missing more than 30 years ago, reports News12 Connecticut.

A former staff member at the Center was a good friend of Kathleen Durst, who was a victim of domestic violence and was looking to leave the relationship, News12 said.

Durst graduated from what was then Western Connecticut State College in Danbury in 1978 with a nursing degree, according to the News Times website

As an already married nursing student, Kathleen Durst became friends with fellow student Ellen Strauss, who is now a family lawyer in Weston, the News Times reported.

Strauss has kept a file on Durst and his alleged crimes as she continues to fight for justice for her friend since her disappearance in 1982, the News Times said. She was last seen alive at a party in Newtown, the story said.

Robert Durst, 71, a Scarsdale native, was officially charged by Los Angeles prosecutors in the 2000 killing of his friend Susan Berman and is also facing weapons charges in Louisiana.

The recent HBO documentary "Jinxed" has prompted  New York State Police investigator Joseph C. Becerra to say that both his division and the Westchester District Attorney's office are still looking into the 1982 disappearance of Durst's wife Kathleen.
