Darien Honors Kids Who Saved Babysitter

Two Darien children who saved their babysitter's life in January by quickly calling 911 will be honored this Thursday. Darien Police received a call at around 5 p.m. on January 26 from 10-year-old Tucker Stoops saying that his babysitter, Naida Maldonado, was having trouble breathing and was unresponsive.

Police and EMS arrived on the scene and determined that the babysitter was in respiratory distress. Darien EMS and Stamford Paramedics were able to intubate her by inserting a tube into her airway before rushing her to the hospital.

Tucker later told police that his 7-year-old sister, Nina, had first discovered that Maldonado was having a problem and alerted him. Police said that when making the call, Tucker was calm and polite and able to relay important information quickly. Doctors told the children's mother, Christina Stoops, that the babysitter most likely would have died if help had arrived a few minutes later.

Maldonado has worked for the family for 10 years. Before that she was a police officer in Puerto Rico. She is expected to have a full recovery.

The Darien Police will give Tucker and Nina an award Thursday evening at the Darien Library for their lifesaving efforts. All the emergency responders who took part in the rescue will be on hand to congratulate the two children for their bravery.
