Olius Lyon will get a long overdue memorial service on Nov. 11. The Civil War private from Easton died in a confederate prison in Salisbury, N.C., in 1864.
Lyon enlisted in Company E of the 12th Connecticut Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia and was later buried in a mass grave on Dec. 12, 1864, outside the walls of the prison.
Members of Averill's Rifles 11th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry reenacting unit will present a rifle volley, and Helen Keller Middle School students will perform patriotic music.
Veterans and the public are invited to the ceremony, which will be hosted by the Easton Cemetery Committee. It will take place at 1190 Sport Hill Road, in Easton, rain or shine, on Nov. 11 at noon.
