Fairfield County Residents Warned About Massive IRS Phone Scam

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Fairfield County residents are being warned about a new, nationwide phone scam involving callers posing as IRS agents, according to CBS News. 

The IRS is currently investigating one of the largest, most pervasive phone scams in history.

The scammers reportedly are calling up to 10,000 people every week and demanding payment for taxes. The scammers provide a name and an IRS badge number and threaten victims with freezing of assets or arrest if payment is not made, CBS News reported. 

The IRS has said this is the largest scam it has had investigate, with more than 3,000 having been bilked of a total of $15.5 million so far, CBS News said.
